Health Care Provider Helps Ensure HIPAA Compliance With Comprehensive Spyware Defense
ISLANDIA, N.Y., May 10, 2005 – Computer Associates International, Inc. (NYSE: CA) today announced that Seattle's Northwest Hospital & Medical Center has selected CA's eTrust PestPatrol Anti-Spyware to guard against the growing deluge of spyware and related threats.
Northwest Hospital & Medical Center needed a powerful spyware defense to protect its 1,200 end-users and more than 9,000 patients. The hospital's decision to use eTrust PestPatrol Anti-Spyware will keep end users productive and help protect its Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) compliance efforts.
“Protecting the organization from malware like spyware is of paramount concern to us, and HIPAA requires us to maintain electronic safeguards for patient privacy,” said Ken Burton, Chief Technology Officer at Northwest Hospital & Medical Center. “With spyware becoming increasingly invasive, the risk it presented was more than we could accept. We had to address this issue immediately.”
Northwest Hospital & Medical Center selected eTrust PestPatrol Anti-Spyware after an extensive evaluation during which the CA solution detected more spyware variants than any other anti-spyware product, while keeping total CPU utilization down to around 35 percent. eTrust PestPatrol Anti-Spyware was also easily deployed across the hospital's networked environment.
The hospital found that free anti-spyware tools did not offer the requisite security functionality or the enterprise capabilities necessary for deployment across a complex corporate network. Other anti-spyware products were considered too taxing on desktop PCs because they took 20-30 minutes to execute and consumed 70-80 percent of CPU capacity.
eTrust PestPatrol Anti-Spyware efficiently detects tens of thousands of “pests” — including spyware, adware, Trojans, denial-of-service attack agents, and other Web-based threats. It allows security administrators to centrally manage anti-spyware protection for an unlimited number of network desktops, both local and remote.
“eTrust PestPatrol is the most effective at helping us detect and remove pests without stressing our network or our PCs,” said Rob Williams, technician team lead at Northwest Hospital. “Its centralized management console makes it easy for our IT staff to manage the entire network from a single server, and its logging capabilities give us the kind of reporting we need to address any issue immediately.”
Northwest Hospital & Medical Center has also licensed the latest pest information services through the CA Security Advisor (http://ca.com/securityadvisor). This service provides vulnerability and configuration research, round-the-clock monitoring and protection against malicious software, spyware/adware and “blended” threats. CA Security Advisor maintains one of the world's largest online threat databases and provides computer administrators with specific directions on how to eliminate malicious code and prevent infection.
“The spyware threat is growing so quickly and taking on so many forms that IT teams need both great technology and great support to effectively protect their organizations,” said Sam Curry, vice president of eTrust security management at CA. “By uniquely providing this combination of effective software and security expertise, CA enables our customers to protect themselves while minimizing the time their security teams spend on spyware-related problems.”
