Using the Windows Recovery Console with PPClean
Some pests are installed at too low a level for PPClean to remove them while Windows is running. To delete such things, you'll need to boot from an alternate system. We recommend the Windows Recovery Console, but a bootable CD or floppy will do as well. For more information about the Windows Recovery Console, see Microsoft Knowledge Base Article 229716 for Windows 2000, or Microsoft Knowledge Base Article 314059 for Windows XP.
PPClean has created a batch script called C:\PPCleanDeleteAtReboot.bat which will try to delete some protected pest files. These files aren't vulnerable now (and in fact they may not be visible), but they will be when you boot into the Recovery Console. Once you've done that, run the script to delete the files, and then PPClean will run at reboot to remove the rest of the pest.
Steps:
Installing the Windows Recovery Console
- Insert your Windows install CD.
- Open a command prompt and run D:\i386\winnt32.exe /cmdcons (where D is your CD drive).
- Click through the installation dialogs.
Booting into the Windows Recovery Console
- Reboot your computer.
- At the boot menu, choose Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
(If you can't see the boot menu, you have to edit C:\boot.ini. In the [boot loader] section, change timeout=0 to something like timeout=30.)
Running the Batch Script
- Type batch C:\PPCleanDeleteAtReboot.bat。
(There will be a couple error messages which you can ignore.)
- Type exit to reboot normally.
- Finish
Alternate Steps (without Recovery Console):
- Insert a bootable CD or floppy, and boot from it.
- Run C:\PPCleanDeleteAtReboot.bat.
- Reboot normally and it is done.
