Configuring BlackICE to Work With PestPatrol
PestPatrol functions normally within a BlackICE-protected computer, but your intervention is required when PestPatrol is updated over the Internet. At such a time, you must grant permission for the transfer and running of the newly updated program.
The “Application Control” and "Communications Control” tabs may require adjustment to allow installation and use of the changed or new component.
Firewall
On the Firewall tab...
All settings are at your discretion. Even the “Paranoid: block all unsolicited inbound traffic” will not impede a PestPatrol update sequence.

Application Control
On the Application Control tab...
- Select “Enable Application Protection”
- For “When an unknown application launches:”, select “Ask me what to do.”
These BlackICE settings take into consideration that the Application Protection is initiated and checked, but the final decision has been left to your discretion. The “Application Control” tab works in conjunction with the “Communication Control” tab.
Communications Control
On the Communications Control tab...
- Select “Enable Application Protection.”
- Select “Prompt before terminating the application.
If BlackICE is set to function as a firewall without “Application Protection” enabled (Communications Control tab), then no further user interaction with BlackICE is required to update PestPatrol.
Application Protection initiated on this tab will consist of popup boxes from BlackICE prompting you for decisions when a new program is encountered. After update of a new program, if you are satisfied with the results, a new baseline will be required.
